Today, brides are still wearing the traditional white wedding
dress. However many brides choose Ivory or off white, depending
on their skin tone and colouring. Brides do choose to marry in
blue, green and even black, but it seems most girls still have
a tendency towards the traditions of old - the white wedding
dress. Being a lover of poetry myself I quote you the an old
poem which suggests how the colour of your wedding dress can
influence your future marriage:
"Married in white, you will have chosen all right.
Married in grey , you will go far away.
Married in black, you will wish yourself back.
Married in red, you'll wish yourself dead.
Married in blue, you will always be true.
Married in pearl, you'll live in a whirl.
Married in green, ashamed to be seen,
Married in yellow, ashamed of the fellow.
Married in brown, you'll live out of town.
Married in pink, your spirits will sink."
Did you know that wedding dressess were not always white.
History has played an influence in the traditions of today. As
far back as 1840, The marriage of Queen Victoria to her cousin
Albert of Saxe-Coburg, has had a great influence on weddings.
Queen Victoria set the trend by marrying in a white wedding
dress. However brides continued to get married in bridal gowns
of different colours but white was seen as the colour of
choice. A white wedding dress symbolises a brides virginity and
innocence.
Edwardian brides became more extravagant as the decade
progressed but this was not to last long with the outbreak of
World War 1. Styles then became simpler and began to reflect
the changing role of women in society. Coco Chanel introduced
the short wedding dress in the 1920s. A white dress knee length
with a long train, making white the universal colour for
wedding dresses. Once the war ended and people prospered once
more the large dream weddings of the Victorian era became a
reality once more.
Women have throughout history wanted to look as beautiful as
princesses on their wedding day. For most it is the sacred
occasion that has been dreamed of since they were little girls.
It is the perfect occasion to feel special and look exquisite.
Since the 1950s, the women have become more individualistic and
brides now stand before their grooms adorned in silk and lace
gowns of varying lengths and shades. Whatever your choice this
is your fairytale day and the perfect opportunity to reflect
your own style and elegance in choosing a wedding dress.
