The Cost of Your Wedding Photography

What You Should Pay and What You Should Get

What you receive for the cost of your wedding photos will depend on the selection of your professional photographer. That is the bottom line. No two photographers have the same experience or style and prices vary greatly from one photographer to another.

Let's set a scenario and compare the costs of two photographers:

The wedding will occur at the same venue and all photos will be taken at the venue. The photos that you, the wedding couple want, will be of the Bride arriving, the ceremony, congratulations after the ceremony.  You will also want the formal photo shoot, and a mock cake cutting. The total time required will be about 3 hours.

Photographer A will do the photography and supply you with a DVD containing the digital negatives with assignment of copyright to you, a proof album of 4"X6" prints, and two A4 size prints for a total cost of $900.00 to $1000.00.

Photographer B will do the photography. He will not supply you with a DVD containing the digital negatives. You must return to his/her studio to pick your images and have them printed by him. He will attempt to justify the higher cost of his printing by saying that he does custom printing. He will also insist that you have an album included in his "package" This album will be costed at an exorbitant price. What will be your total cost for his work? $5000.00 and often more. I have been told of one photographer whose minimum "package" is $20,000.00.

As you can see from the scenarios, prices vary greatly for wedding photography. Do not assume that because one photographer charges less that another, their work will be inferior. Ask these questions when choosing a photographer for your wedding.

1. Will you customize your service to suit our needs and wants?

2. Will you supply us with a DVD containing the digital negatives?

3. What are your hourly rates and if we require an additional 1/2 hour, will we be charged for a full hour? (you should be charged for only 1/2 hour)

4. When you find the photographer(s) you feel will be just what you require, by all means DO meet with them to see their work. And discuss your requirements and ask any questions you may have about their work and charges.
